California gas prices have long plagued Democratic candidates.

This year is different

California's gas prices remain the highest in the nation, a political vulnerability that has dogged Democratic candidates for years as voters blame the state's environmental regulations and taxes for painful costs at the pump.

But the ongoing war in Iran has created an unexpected opening for California Democrats, who are now working to reframe the conversation around fuel costs as a matter of energy independence rather than state policy failures.

Democratic strategists argue that global instability has demonstrated the risks of dependence on foreign oil, allowing them to position their clean energy agenda as a long-term solution to price volatility rather than its cause.

Whether the reframing succeeds with voters remains to be seen, but party officials say the shifted political landscape gives them their best chance in years to neutralize an issue that has historically favored Republicans.
