Airbnb hosts can no longer make guests strip beds and wash dishes under new rules

Airbnb has announced that hosts will no longer be allowed to require guests to strip beds, wash dishes, or perform other checkout chores, in a major update to the platform's policies.

The new rules, which apply to all reservations booked on or after November 20, respond to years of guest complaints about excessive checkout demands that many felt contradicted the hospitality the platform promised.

Consumer advocates have long criticized the practice of hosts charging cleaning fees while simultaneously requiring guests to clean, calling it a double charge that undermined trust in the platform.

Hosts will still be able to ask guests to perform reasonable tasks like turning off lights and locking doors, but the days of checkout chore lists are officially over.
