US embassy accuses Canada of election meddling ahead of midterms

The US embassy has accused Canada of interfering in American elections ahead of the midterm vote, an extraordinary allegation against one of the United States' closest allies.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney swiftly dismissed the claim, noting that it was the United States that initiated trade actions against Canada, suggesting the accusation was a deflection from trade tensions.

The exchange marks a new low in relations between the two neighbors, which have been strained by disputes over trade policy and diverging approaches to a range of international issues.

Diplomatic observers say the public nature of the accusation is highly unusual between allies with such deep economic and security ties, raising questions about the state of the bilateral relationship.
