'Brother of the More Famous Jack' finds its way to a new generation of readers

Barbara Trapido's debut novel, first published more than 40 years ago, has been reissued this month, introducing a new generation of readers to one of contemporary fiction's most beloved narrators.

The novel's protagonist, Katherine Browne, is an eager-to-please young woman in mini-skirts whose warmth and vulnerability have charmed readers since the book first appeared, and critics say her appeal has only grown with time.

It is hard not to fall in love with Katherine, reviewers note, as she navigates love, friendship, and self-discovery with a sincerity that feels both of its era and strikingly modern.

The reissue arrives at a moment when readers are rediscovering overlooked literary gems, and publishers say Trapido's debut deserves its place alongside the era's more famous works of coming-of-age fiction.
